Hintergrund Übergewicht ist ein immer häufiger auftretendes Problem bei Pferden. Welche Auswirkungen das jedoch aus orthopädischer Sicht auf die Population von Islandpferden in Österreich hat, wurde noch nicht untersucht. Die vorliegende Studie beschäftigt sich genauer mit dem Einfluss des Body Condition Scores auf die Inzidenz orthopädischer Erkrankungen beim Islandpferd in Österreich. Ergebnisse Es wurde bei 500 Islandpferden (≥ 4 Jahre; 252 Wallache (14 ± 7 Jahren), 33 Hengste (12 ± 6 Jahren), 215 Stuten (12 ± 6 Jahren)) die Körpermasse auf einer tragbaren Waage, das Stockmaß und die Brustbreite, gemessen. Zusätzlich wurde der Body Condition Score der Pferde bestimmt und ein Fragebogen mit Hilfe der PferdebesitzerInnen ausgefüllt. Der durchschnittliche BCS der 500 beurteilten Pferde lag bei 5,7 ± 0,6 und variierte zwischen 3,3 und 7,3. Die Islandpferde wurden drei Kategorien zugeordnet, 10% waren unterkonditioniert (BCS von 1 – 4,9), 68% normalkonditioniert (BCS von 5 – 6) und 22% überkonditioniert (BCS von 6,1 – 9). PferdebesitzerInnen gaben in den Fragebögen an, dass 172 (34%) der beurteilten Pferde bereits in der Vergangenheit oder zum Zeitpunkt der Datenerhebung lahm waren. Von diesen 172 Islandpferden waren 44 Pferde (25,6%) übergewichtig, 16 Pferde (9,3%) untergewichtig und 112 Pferde (65,1%) waren normal konditioniert. Sehnenerkrankungen/-schäden waren in dieser Studie die am häufigsten vorkommenden orthopädischen Erkrankungen, die zu Lahmheiten führten. Die Prävalenz von Sehnenerkrankungen/-schäden war signifikant mit der Kondition des Pferdes (unter-, normal- und überkonditioniert) positiv korreliert (K=0,101; P=0,024), wie auch mit der Körpermasse (K=0,139; P=0,002) und der Brustbreite (K=0,094; P=0,035). Schlussfolgerungen Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Studie zeigen, dass 22% der 500 untersuchten Islandpferde in Österreich übergewichtig sind und bei diesen die Prävalenz von Sehnenerkrankungen/-schäden höher ist. Die regelmäßige Überprüfung des BCS ist auch beim Islandpferd als Teil der orthopädischen Gesundheitsprophylaxe empfehlenswert.

Background Obesity is an increasingly common problem in horses. However, what effects this has on the population of Icelandic horses in Austria from an orthopedic point of view has not yet been investigated. The present study deals more precisely with the influence of the body condition score on the incidence of orthopedic diseases in Icelandic horses in Austria. Results In 500 Icelandic horses (≥ 4 years; 252 geldings (14 ± 7 years), 33 stallions (12 ± 6 years), 215 mares (12 ± 6 years)) was the body mass on a portable scale, the height at the withers and the width of the chest, measured. In addition, the body condition score of the horses was determined and a questionnaire was filled out with the help of the horse owners. The average BCS of the 500 horses evaluated was 5.7 ± 0.6 and varied between 3.3 and 7.3. The Icelandic horses were assigned to three categories, 10% were underconditioned (BCS 1 - 4.9), 68% normal conditioned (BCS 5 - 6) and 22% overconditioned (BCS 6.1 - 9). Horse owners stated in the questionnaires that 172 (34%) of the horses assessed were lame in the past or at the time of data collection. Of these 172 Icelandic horses, 44 horses (25.6%) were overweight, 16 horses (9.3%) were underweight, and 112 horses (65.1%) were normally conditioned. Tendon disease/damage was the most common orthopedic condition leading to lameness in this study. The prevalence of tendon disease/damage was significantly positively correlated with horse condition (under, normal, and overconditioned) (K=0.101; P=0.024), body mass (K=0.139; P=0.002), and the chest width (K=0.094; P=0.035). Conclusions The results of the present study show that 22% of the 500 Icelandic horses examined in Austria are overweight and the prevalence of tendon diseases/damages is higher in Islandic horses. Regular checking of the BCS is also recommended for Icelandic horses as part of orthopedic health prophylaxis.
