</ns1:description>
<ns1:description language="en">The complexity of dirofilariasis becomes obvious when considering the parasitic life cycle, distribution, host-parasite relationship, and the different clinical manifestations, which vary depending on the parasite infecting the diverse definitive hosts. This strongly marked in feline infection, which differs in many characteristics from canine infection, such as worm burden, presence or absence of microfilariae and appearing symptoms, and in some cases requires an entirely different approach. The diagnosis and treatment of both feline cardiopulmonary and subcutaneous dirofilariosis represent an ubiquitous challenge for veterinary practitioners all over the world, with partial or complete failure or lack of owner compliance often representing the greatest hurdle to overcome. The knowledge of the specifics of the aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical expression and required specific diagnostic approach in cats, an ever-present awareness of the presence and transmission of these parasitoses, and a comprehensively conducted owner education are key to their successful diagnosis, treatment and prevention. There are numerous diagnostic tools available and treatment can be performed using various protocols and medications, but can be lengthy and complicated. Therefore, prevention is the most important measure in controlling feline dirofilariosis, which at the same time, especially in the case of cardiopulmonary dirofilar-iosis, can protect and save the lives of many cats and is characterized by the application of an adequate chemoprophylaxis throughout the year, which is able to successfully prevent transmission. </ns1:description>
