<ns1:description language="en">The topic of pain is increasingly the focus of studies and research. The reduction of pain to a minimum ensures an improvement in animal welfare and recovery, which in turn leads to better treatment success (Bisgaard, et al. 2001). In order to be able to assess pain, an easy-to-use, objective and reproducible method is required, which can also be used in a busy hospital setting (Gleerup und Lindegaard 2016). The aim of this work is therefore an analysis of posture to assess the emotional state of horses. For this purpose, 439 video recordings from different study groups were analyzed. The recordings were filmed at different times of the day and year as well as in different countries and regions. It was irrelevant what breed, age, gender and state of health the horses had. The horses were filmed at rest for a period of at least 15 seconds and their current behavior was influenced or disturbed as little as possible. As part of the investigation, the videos were examined in terms of limb position, general behavior and comfort level. In addition, corresponding angles were determined on the horses by means of computer-aided video analysis in order to be able to find and quantify further relationships. Statistical evaluation using cross tables to identify relationships and chi-square tests to assess significance can demonstrate a highly significant relationship between the position of the limbs and the comfort level. In addition, decision trees can be worked out, with which a classification with a hit rate of over 50% in the respective comfort level can be carried out painless, discomfort or painful. This finding needs to be confirmed by further studies in order to increase the specificity and sensitivity of a possible method for the determination of pain in horses. It turns out that by including the geometric morphology and assessing the position of the limbs, a conclusion about the comfort level is possible.</ns1:description>
