<ns1:description language="en">Content of the present study
The position of the horse in the stall, especially the localization of the head, are used as parameters for pain recognition in horses. Painful horses tend to spent more time with their head at the back of the stall. The aim of this pilot study is to test whether the localization of the horse's head in the box can be determined from video material over a period of 24 hours. Furthermore, whether the percentage distribution for standing in the front and back part of the box can be calculated. The results could help to develop a software for pain recognition by means of automatic video analysis.

Material and methods
For the study, eight horses undergoing inpatient treatment at the equine clinic of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna were filmed in the stall over a period of 24 hours. Using an image processing and tracking software (Loopy® Neural Network, Kritzendorf, Austria) the coordinates for the localization of the head in the box were determined from the video material. The localization of the head was illustrated in scatter plots. For spatial representation a three-dimensional contour of the box and marked areas for feeding, resting and drinking were inserted into the scatter plots. The percentage distribution for the localization of the head in the front and back part of the box was calculated by a statistics program (MedCalc Software Ltd, Ostend, Belgium). A dependency between the percentage distribution and the recording time of the videos was investigated.

Results
It was possible to determine the localization of the head from the video material over a total amount of 12-19 hours per horse. Movement patterns observed from the videos are shown by the corresponding density in the scatter plots. Higher densities in the previously determined feeding, resting and watering places can be seen. The representation of the three-dimensional contour of the box allows a spatial idea of the localization of the head in relation to the box. On average, the horses stand significantly more with their head in the front of the box. Differences in the distribution can be seen within the horses as well as within the temporal course of the individual horses. The distribution is independent of the recording times of the videos.</ns1:description>
