<ns1:description language="en">This research work deals with the formation and development of the Imperial “horse ballet” in early modern Vienna. The history of its origin begins in the Middle Ages – the period of jousting events and tournaments. The main focus of this paper concentrates on the transition from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern Age – in this time the tournament developed from an act of war to an act of performance and classical equestrian art served the representation of the empire. The influence of the Renaissance, and in particular of the Baroque, played a decisive role in the development of the knightly tournament into an artistic equestrian performance. The Baroque period demanded pompous, elaborate and expensive art forms and representations. Therefore, it is not surprising that Absolutism, which was prevailing at that time, and the respective rulers used baroque art forms to represent their governance and to legitimize megalomania. The artfully choreographed “horse ballet” represents the climax of equestrian staging and representation in Vienna in the 16th and 17th centuries. The mastery of the so-called high classical equestrian art is an absolute condition for the success of a “horse ballet”, especially since the artistic jumps of the horses and their sublime movements gave the desired elitist and pompous character. The formation of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, the only equestrian institution that consistently trains horses and riders according to the rules of the old classical equestrian art this day, is an important component of my research work. Special attention is paid to the “horse ballet” not only because of the artistic equestrian performances, rather the practicality is in the foreground. “Horse ballet” is one of many artistic products which has been misused for power representation in the age of Absolutism.</ns1:description>
