<ns1:description language="en">This diploma thesis deals with the B-mode echostructure analysis of the canine placenta during physiological pregnancies. Hypothesis was that the values obtained during the postimplantation and midgestation period reveal significant differences. For this purpose, 26 bitches were examined with B-mode ultrasound. The sonographic pictures were evaluated with computer- assisted echotexture analysis after digitalization of B-mode pictures. On each image of the placenta, five equal quadratic regions of interest (ROI) were chosen. In these ROIs, different parameters, like mean grey value, mean gradient, homogeneity, entropy and contrast were analysed with echotexture analysis. The aim of this study was to examine, whether the examined parameters change significantly during physiological pregnancies. This diploma thesis has shown that the echotexture analysis of the placenta of dogs during physiological pregnancies reveals different values during different gestational stages. The parameters contrast and mean grey value increased significantly between the postimplantation and midgestation period of pregnancy. These differences can be explained by the modifications in the placenta during these pregnancy stages; the complexity of the placental labyrinth increases markedly, mostly due to the growth of maternal and fetal tissue, the development of the placental labyrinth and the ongoing vascularisation. Therefore, the echotexture analysis may be a further possibility for the monitoring of bitches during pregnancy. However, further studies are necessary for establishment of a characteristic base of datas for the physiological canine pregnancy. In the future, comparison with data from pathological pregnancies would be desirable, for the early detection of disturbed pregnancies. One more reason for choosing the echotexture analysis is that we do not need any further examinations of the dogs. The echotexture analysis is a method, which uses the images made during B-mode sonography to confirm pregnancy, no further manipulation of the patients is necessary.</ns1:description>
