<dc:description xml:lang="eng">The aim of this diploma thesis was to compare surgical duration and complications of laparoscopic and open cryptorchidectomy in dogs. Information about the patient (identification number, age, body weight, breed, surgery date), surgical duration, surgical method, surgical site, intra- and postoperative complications, mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), endtidal CO2, (EtCO2), ventilation mode and body temperature during surgery was gathered retrospectively. Surgical duration was evaluated via a linear model with an interaction between weight and methods. Complications were analyzed using Fisher’s exact test for count data, binary logistic regression, Poisson regression models and linear mixed models. MAP was specifically analyzed via a linear model with an interaction between ventilation mode and body weight. There were 46 cases: 22 laparotomies and 24 laparoscopies. Surgical duration increased with body weight. This effect was stronger in laparotomies (p=0.0006) but was also seen in laparoscopies (p=0.034). Surgical duration also increased with age (p=0.03). Mean arterial pressure was lower in laparoscopies (p=0.031). For ventilated dogs, MAP decreased with body weight (p=0.0012). Higher body weight was associated with lower odds of developing moderate hypothermia but a greater likelihood of mild hypothermia (p=0.029). Temperature was lower in older animals (p=0.019) and higher for prolonged surgical durations (p=0.036). Patients that breathed exclusively spontaneously had higher body temperatures than dogs that were exclusively ventilated (p=0.014). Endtidal CO2 decreased with age (p=0.007). In conclusion, larger dogs may profit from laparoscopic approach.</dc:description>
