Processed roughage products (e.g., cobs, cubes, flakes and pellets) containing lucerne exhibited high concentrations of phytoestrogens and plant toxins compared to hay. The data also showed that supplementary feeds, particularly grain-based mueslis and mashes, were more prevalent sources of pesticide and veterinary drug residues than feed materials. Unusual substances in horse feed like colchicine and monensin, both highly toxic to horses, were also detected in roughly 10 to 20 % of the samples. However, our risk assesement suggests that the contamination of both compounds would not pose an acute health risk to horses.\n\nConclusions\nThe study reveals the complexity of biotoxins and chemical residues and their potential risks in marketed equine feeds and underscores the critical need for targeted regulations, routine testing to ensure equine health and welfare."}]}],"bf:provisionActivity":[{"@type":"bf:Publication","bf:agent":[{"@type":"schema:Organization","schema:name":[{"@value":"Elsevier"}]}]}],"dce:rights":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"© 2025 The Author(s)"}],"dce:subject":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Ergot Alkaloids"}]},{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Horse Feeding"}]},{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Horse Health"}]},{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Mycotoxins"}]},{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Veterinary Drug Resistance"}]}],"dce:title":[{"@type":"bf:Title","bf:mainTitle":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Exposure of horses to biotoxins, phytoestrogens, and pesticides from different feed materials and supplementary feeds"}]}],"dcterms:accessRights":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/pid.phaidra.org\/vocabulary\/QW5R-NG4J"],"skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"open access"},{"@language":"ita","@value":"Open Access"}]}],"dcterms:issued":["2025"],"dcterms:language":["eng"],"dcterms:type":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/pid.phaidra.org\/vocabulary\/69ZZ-2KGX"],"skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Text"},{"@language":"deu","@value":"Text"},{"@language":"ita","@value":"Testo"}]}],"ebucore:filename":["A91cu3cqe_18lyo22_904.tmp.pdf"],"ebucore:hasMimeType":["application\/pdf"],"edm:hasType":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/pid.phaidra.org\/vocabulary\/VKA6-9XTY"],"skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"journal article"},{"@language":"deu","@value":"Wissenschaftlicher Artikel"},{"@language":"ita","@value":"Articolo di rivista"}]}],"edm:rights":["http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/"],"oaire:version":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/pid.phaidra.org\/vocabulary\/PMR8-3C8D"],"skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"version of record (published version)"},{"@language":"ita","@value":"Versione editoriale\/Version of Record"}]}],"rdam:P30004":[{"@type":"ids:doi","@value":"10.1016\/j.jevs.2025.105632"}],"rdau:P60193":[{"@type":"schema:CreativeWork","bibo:volume":[{"@value":"151"}],"dce:title":[{"@type":"bf:Title","bf:mainTitle":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Journal of Equine Veterinary Science"}]}],"dcterms:issued":["2025"],"ids:issn":["1542-7412"]}],"role:aut":[{"@type":"schema:Person","schema:affiliation":[{"@type":"schema:Organization","schema:name":[{"@value":"University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna"}],"skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/ror.org\/01w6qp003"]}],"schema:familyName":[{"@value":"Khiaosa-Ard"}],"schema:givenName":[{"@value":"Ratchaneewan"}],"skos:exactMatch":[{"@type":"ids:orcid","@value":"0000-0003-3359-5787"}]},{"@type":"schema:Person","schema:familyName":[{"@value":"Kwass"}],"schema:givenName":[{"@value":"L.
