However, this approach does not allow to assess whether these traits may instead reflect a shared underlying mechanism, such as a general tendency to approach novel stimuli, regardless of their social nature. In this study, we exposed pre-weaned free-ranging dog puppies to an unfamiliar human and a novel object. Free-ranging dog puppies were chosen to minimize the effect of experience and breed-selection biases. At 3 weeks of age, behaviors such as interaction, activity, and tail-wagging toward a novel object predicted similar behaviors toward a human, suggesting a unified trait rather than separate traits for sociability and object exploration. This challenges the traditional dichotomy between human-directed sociability and object exploration, proposing a common underlying mechanism. Nevertheless, puppies also showed more frequent behaviors with the social stimulus, likely due to greater sensitivity to animated stimuli."}]}],"bf:provisionActivity":[{"@type":"bf:Publication","bf:agent":[{"@type":"schema:Organization","schema:name":[{"@value":"Cell Press"}]}]}],"dce:rights":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"© 2025 The Authors"}],"dce:subject":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Canine Behavior"}]},{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Biological Sciences"}]},{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Cognitive Neuroscience"}]}],"dce:title":[{"@type":"bf:Title","bf:mainTitle":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Object-directed behaviors and human-directed sociability are linked in free-ranging dog puppies"}]}],"dcterms:accessRights":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/pid.phaidra.org\/vocabulary\/QW5R-NG4J"],"skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"open access"},{"@language":"ita","@value":"Open Access"}]}],"dcterms:issued":["2025"],"dcterms:language":["eng"],"dcterms:type":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/pid.phaidra.org\/vocabulary\/69ZZ-2KGX"],"skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Text"},{"@language":"deu","@value":"Text"},{"@language":"ita","@value":"Testo"}]}],"ebucore:filename":["1-s2.0-S2589004225014920-main.pdf"],"ebucore:hasMimeType":["application\/pdf"],"edm:hasType":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/pid.phaidra.org\/vocabulary\/VKA6-9XTY"],"skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"journal article"},{"@language":"deu","@value":"Wissenschaftlicher Artikel"},{"@language":"ita","@value":"Articolo di rivista"}]}],"edm:rights":["http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/"],"oaire:version":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/pid.phaidra.org\/vocabulary\/PMR8-3C8D"],"skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"version of record (published version)"},{"@language":"ita","@value":"Versione editoriale\/Version of Record"}]}],"rdam:P30004":[{"@type":"ids:doi","@value":"10.1016\/j.isci.2025.113231"}],"rdau:P60193":[{"@type":"schema:CreativeWork","bibo:issue":[{"@value":"9"}],"bibo:volume":[{"@value":"28"}],"dce:title":[{"@type":"bf:Title","bf:mainTitle":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"iScience"}]}],"dcterms:issued":["2025"],"ids:issn":["2589-0042"]}],"role:aut":[{"@type":"schema:Person","schema:affiliation":[{"@type":"schema:Organization","schema:name":[{"@value":"University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna"}],"skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/ror.org\/01w6qp003"]}],"schema:familyName":[{"@value":"Lazzaroni"}],"schema:givenName":[{"@value":"Martina"}],"skos:exactMatch":[{"@type":"ids:orcid","@value":"0000-0001-7030-8703"}]},{"@type":"schema:Person","schema:affiliation":[{"@type":"schema:Organization","schema:name":[{"@value":"University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna"}],"skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/ror.org\/01w6qp003"]}],"schema:familyName":[{"@value":"Cimarelli"}],"schema:givenName":[{"@value":"Giulia"}],"skos:exactMatch":[{"@type":"ids:orcid","@value":"0000-0002-6031-0364"}]},{"@type":"schema:Person","schema:familyName":[{"@value":"Delaunay"}],"schema:givenName":[{"@value":"Manon"}]},{"@type":"schema:Person","schema:affiliation":[{"@type":"schema:Organization","schema:name":[{"@value":"University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna"}],"skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/ror.org\/01w6qp003"]}],"schema:familyName":[{"@value":"Range"}],"schema:givenName":[{"@value":"Friederike"}],"skos:exactMatch":[{"@type":"ids:orcid","@value":"0000-0003-3127-5536"}]},{"@type":"schema:Person","schema:affiliation":[{"@type":"schema:Organization","schema:name":[{"@value":"University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna"}],"skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/ror.org\/01w6qp003"]}],"schema:familyName":[{"@value":"Marshall-Pescini"}],"schema:givenName":[{"@value":"Sarah"}],"skos:exactMatch":[{"@type":"ids:orcid","@value":"0000-0002-5944-4701"}]}],"schema:numberOfPages":["14"]}
