<lom:description>

<lom:langstring xml:lang="en">Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease in dogs and requires comprehensive treatment and management to optimize the quality of life of affected animals. Physical medicine and rehabilitation are among the core aspects that can contribute to improving the standard of living of affected animals. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the influence of external mechanical perturbations on postural stability (PS) and existing lameness in dogs with gonarthrosis or coxarthrosis using the body center of pressure (COP) and ground reaction forces. These parameters were evaluated for 6 dogs, and they were divided in two groups: a healthy control group (n=3) and dogs with OA (n=3). The COP parameters and mean vertical force (MFz) were evaluated using a pressure plate while the dogs stand quiet on a motorized training platform. First, the standing measurement was performed, followed by two further conditions in which the training platform generated external mechanical perturbations with different combinations of amplitude and speed. In addition, ground reaction forces (PFz, IFz) were measured before and after training using a pressure plate. For dogs with OA, there were no significant changes in either the symmetry index or the ground reaction forces between the measurement times before and after the training session. This means that there were no indications of increased lameness after training. No statistically significant differences were detected in relation to the COP parameters, but there were hints of trends in PS and possible compensatory effects. This pilot study provides initial evidence that training on a motorized platform is well tolerated by dogs with OA and emphasizes the need for objective measurement methods in rehabilitation medicine. Future studies with larger sample sizes and standardized measurement protocols are necessary to deepen these findings.</lom:langstring>
