Aufbauend auf bestehenden Studien (u.a.

<lom:langstring xml:lang="en">Dead cattle, called fallen cattle, are not allowed to enter the food chain and must be taken by special companies to animal by-product processing plants. In Lower Austria, this is done by SARIA GmbH in Tulln. If there is no suspicion of an epidemic, the exact cause of death is not investigated. Because of this, animal welfare problems can stay unnoticed. To improve this situation, fallen animals are first checked visually by trained transport staff when they are picked up. Animals with visible changes are examined further by the official veterinarian at the processing plant. Based on earlier studies (e.g. Magenschab (1), Haas (2), Klager (3) and Lehnert (4)), this study developed and tested a new, standardized protocol to check fallen cattle for visible body changes. Over 12 days, 134 cattle were examined. 70.8 % showed such changes. The most common signs were dirty skin (56.05 %), poor hoof care (38.9 %), and pressure sores (15.7 %). In nine cases, there were signs of long-term animal suffering. Based on these results, a revised version of the protocol is now suggested. It should help to record animal welfare problems in a standard way and offers a useful tool for better and objective monitoring.</lom:langstring>
