<dc:description xml:lang="eng">Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is of increasing concern in veterinary medicine, prompting acritical reassessment of prophylactic antibiotic use, including equine dental procedures (2,8).Despite their routine administration, the efficacy of perioperative antimicrobials in preventing complications after cheek tooth extractions remains uncertain. This retrospective study evaluated 302 cases of standing cheek tooth extractions performedat the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna between 2018 and 2022. Cases involving sinusitis or extraction of incisors, canines, wolf, or deciduous teeth were excluded. Data on e.g. age, sex, tooth position, antimicrobial use, NSAID administration, fever, and complications were analyzed statistically. Postoperative complications occurred in 20,9 % (63/302) of cases. Multivariable logistic regression identified antibiotic use (OR: 3.43, 95 % CI: 1.40–8.36, p = 0.007), longer NSAID administration (OR: 1.17, 95 % CI: 1.07–1.29, p = 0.001), fever (OR: 3.05, 95 % CI: 1.42–6.56, p = 0.004), and younger age (OR: 0.95, 95 % CI: 0.92–0.99, p = 0.023) as independent risk factors. Contrary to common assumptions, antibiotic use was not associated with a reduced risk of complications. Although limited by its retrospective design and non-standardized follow-up, the findings highlight the need for more selective antimicrobial use in equine dental surgery and support current efforts toward responsible antibiotic stewardship in veterinary practice.</dc:description>

Erfasst wurden u.a.
