<ns1:description language="en">In recent years Icelandic horses have become increasingly important in Europe and the number of Icelandic horses continues to rise. However, this robust race in its country of origin is accustomed to completely different conditions than here on the continent. Iceland, the island of fire and ice, with breath-taking volcanic landscapes, has incomparable soil and climatic conditions. The horses have perfectly adapted to the circumstances of the island in the centuries after they crossed Scandinavia with the Vikings. Nowadays Icelandic horses are kept all over the world, which is not always easy. This document shows the difference between the country of origin - Iceland and the largest exporting country Germany in the areas of feeding and keeping Icelandic horses. Starting with a literature survey describing the conditions in Iceland and Germany. In addition, the preferred husbandry and feeding are dealt with, followed by the main part, the survey. An online questionnaire will be available for Iceland and for Germany, after a given timeline for feedback they are compared. The questionnaires are divided into four sections: General Questions, Performance Questions, Feeding Questions and Health Questions. As assumed the results are really clear. The main difference occurs in concentrate feeding. In Germany almost every horse owner feeds concentrated feed and even more than Iceland’s do. About half of them feed concentrated feed seasonally and the rest not at all. Despite this in Iceland there are more haylage feeding, because of the special climate conditions. Nevertheless, there are more carb and protein-rich pastures in Germany caused by the fertilization. In Iceland the willows are sparser, but more natural with other plants. This is the reason why horses in Iceland can stand much longer on the pasture without problems. According to this, a new form of keeping have to be achieved in Germany, as too little area with fertilized pastures limits the grazing time. As a result, Icelandic horses in Germany are most frequently kept in open stables with seasonal grazing. In parallel hay dust allergies develop with many horses, because they do not have enough free area despite the open stable. The most frequent and most difficult problem with Icelandic horses in Europe is the summer eczema. More than two thirds of those surveyed have horses with eczema. The survey shows that horses should be covered with an eczema blanket immediately after export, as this minimises the risk. As a general summary the keeping and feeding of Icelandic horses in their country of origin and Germany is different in many aspects. The horses in Germany are overfed with protein and carbs, as both the pastures have more of it and more concentrated feed is fed. This can cause several problems, such as laminitis or stomach ulcers. Although the reasons for summer eczema have not been completely clarified, overfeeding can also be responsible for eczema problems. Often respiratory diseases are associated with this. Since the immune system of horses is weakened, the permanent spores of the moulds can become more dangerous and cause an allergy. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the horses immediately after export. Covering up with an eczema blanket directly and slowly getting used to the pastures are important points. In the best case the horses stand on already eroded, large pastures, whereby the conditions in Iceland are represented most realistically. The owners of exported horses should inform themselves more about the country of origin before the export, in order to arrange the transition of the horses in the new country as fluently as possible and to prevent risks.</ns1:description>
