<ns1:description language="en">The aim of this work was to investigate, whether the sonographic measurement of the distance of cutis, subcutis and M. longissimus dorsi in the range of the 1st/2nd. lumbar vertebrae in alpacas represent a practical and objective alternative to the body condition score as a body condition determination. Changes in the nutritional status of new world camelids to which alpacas belong are often the only outwardly recognizable signs of illness. The most common causes are endo- and ectoparasites as well as infectious diseases. There are various possibilities and scales for the elevation of the body condition score, the most commonly used is a five-point scale ranging from cachectic to adipose. Similar to the body condition determination of the new world camelids, there are also different ways of cattle and of small ruminants to determine the body condition score, for example schemes with 5 or 10 gradations. Overall, the body condition score is a subjective assessment, which makes this assessment prone to errors as soon as several people want to collect and compare it. For cattle, the sonographic measurement of back fat thickness has been established as an objective method, which served as a point of reference for this work. A total of 54 alpacas were measured for this work. Gender, state of pregnancy, grooming status, weight, body condition score and sonographic distance measuring of m. longissimus dorsi, skin and subcutis were recorded. The study showed a middle correlation with significance between the body condition score and the sonographic distance measuring (r > 0.584 with a significance level of p < 0.05) in male, female pregnant and female non-pregnant animals. The sonographic examination is very easy, gentle and can be carried out without much effort. However, it is not yet possible to assign muscle thickness to a specific body condition score based on the data used, because animals with extreme body condition (cachectic, obese) weren’t examined. Work on alpacas and llamas with a larger range of the bcs and then possible subdivisions such as pregnancy progress should follow.</ns1:description>
