<ns1:description language="en">With the intensification of goat husbandry, the inadequate keeping of the animals can lead to injuries to the animals from horn blows. So far, this problem has been countered with thermal dehorning, which, however, is associated with risks and restrictions of the well-being of the animal. An alternative to thermal dehorning could be the injection of clove oil or its component isoeugenol under the horn bud of goat kids, as these substances have a slightly anesthetic effect and, in high concentrations, trigger the necrosis of cells. The goal of this work was to investigate whether the injection of clove oil and isoeugenol to prevent horn growth causes more pain and stress than the injection of NaCl, but is still gentler than thermal dehorning. The eye temperature, which was measured using a thermography camera, was used as an indicator for the evaluation of pain and stress. A total of 40 animals were evenly divided between the four treatments: clove oil, isoeugenol, NaCl and Buddex. Depending on the treatment, the animals were injected with 0.2 ml of said substance. The thermal dehorning was performed under general anesthesia. The measurement times of the eye temperature were on day 0 “before” the procedure, as well as directly “after”, “1h”, “3h” and “6h” after the procedure. On day 1-5 after the procedure, measurements were taken in the morning and evening at approximately the same time. The results were statistically evaluated with linearly mixed models. In contrast to clove oil and isoeugenol, the injection of NaCl did not show any decrease in the eye temperature on the day of the operation; a comparison with thermal dehorning was not possible on day 0 due to the anesthesia of the animals. There was no difference in eye temperature between treatments on days 1-5. The injection of clove oil and isoeugenol leads to greater acute pain on the day of the procedure than the injection of physiological saline solution. For a final assessment of the exposure on the following days, additional parameters, such as the mechanical nociceptive threshold and the behavior must be used.</ns1:description>
