Raw food diets (BARF) have grown in popularity over the last years. There is also an increasing number of owners who are already raising their puppies with this feeding regime. In view of the fact, that this is a pretty new trend in puppy nutrition, there is a lack of empirical data and scientific studies. Therefore, the goal of this study was to evaluate feeding plans used in practice for nutritional imbalances.
Material and methods
36 raw meat-based diets of growing dogs submitted to two veterinary nutritionist practices in Austria and Germany from 2013 to 2019 were analysed retrospectively. The rations were evaluated with the software Napfcheck®, in accordance with the nutrient recommendations of the National Research Council (NRC 2006). In addition, growth curves for determining the optimal growth rate of each dog were constructed.
Results
Analysis of the diets revealed that all of them showed nutritional imbalances. Calcium met the recommended allowance for growing dogs in only one diet. 83,3 % of the participants were below the recommended allowance, the majority of them below the minimal requirement. Calcium undersupply during growth can lead to serious skeletal diseases. The majority of the feeding plans also showed a supply of trace elements below the recommended allowance. In most of them chloride and sodium were below the recommended allowance, potassium and magnesium supply above the recommended allowance. More than half of all were above the recommended allowance of Vitamin A, few of them showed a supply above the safe upper limit. Regarding Vitamin D3 supply the majority was below the recommended allowance, two feeding plans were composed without Vitamin D3. The evaluation of the growth curves showed that more than half of the participants presented an incorrect development.
Conclusions
Home-made diets often do not meet all nutritional needs and can cause severe health problems, especially in growing dogs. Therefore specialized veterinarians should be consulted when owners choose to feed BARF diets to their dogs. However, owners increasingly want their dogs to be fed naturally. It’s important to inform these dog owners about benefits and risks of this feeding regime, recommend professional nutritional advice and offer alternatives (for example cooking the meat).</ns1:description>
