<ns1:description language="en">In this study, on the one hand, the quality of the clinical selection of animals by veterinarians at a calf market when examining for dermatophytes was evaluated and, on the other hand, predisposing factors were to be detected that could facilitate separation and isolation of diseased individuals before sale. Furthermore, an attempt was made to evaluate the informative value of a simple apparatus-based examination technique, such as trichoscopy, so that faster diagnosis is possible and the spread of dermatophytes in calves via the livestock market can be prevented. The results of the clinical and microscopic examination were checked, in accordance with current clinical practice, by cultivation on culture media. For this purpose, during the study period, the animals brought to the calf markets were selected by the veterinary staff according to macroscopic criteria and samples were sent to the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, for further microscopic and cultural examination. It was found that trichoscopy is unsuitable as sole method for diagnosing dermatophytosis, but also inappropriate for verifying suspicious cases of infection, since, compared to visual assessment, more samples were evaluated as false positive and false negative results were also obtained. In these cases, visual assessment alone is probably the fastest and most cost-effective method for a relatively reliable diagnosis of ringworm in calves. No predisposing factors related to animal age, sex and breed could be identified. A seasonal accumulation of dermatophytoses could not be demonstrated in this study. Lesion sizes only play a limited role.</ns1:description>
